Owning a luxury, exotic, or classic car comes with risks most drivers don't think about. When something goes wrong and the car needs to be moved, the wrong tow truck can cause damage worth more than several years of insurance premiums. Here's what matters when your high-end vehicle needs a tow.

1. Insist on a Flatbed

The single most important rule: luxury cars need flatbed transport. A wheel-lift tow truck (the kind that grabs the front or rear wheels and drags the rest) is fine for a basic Honda Civic. It can:

• Damage low-slung body work
• Stress your transmission and drivetrain
• Bend or break ground effects, splitters, or skirts
• Damage all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive systems

A flatbed picks up the entire car so nothing is dragging or stressed.

2. Low-Clearance Loading Capability

Many luxury cars and exotics have very low ground clearance. Loading them onto a flatbed requires special techniques to avoid scraping the front bumper or undercarriage. Make sure the company knows how to handle low-clearance vehicles before they arrive.

3. Soft Tie-Downs Only

The straps used to secure your car on the flatbed should be soft tie-downs that contact the car only at protected points (typically the wheels, never the body). Wheel straps that wrap around the tires are the gold standard for luxury vehicles.

4. Trained Operators

Loading a $200,000 car requires a different skill set than loading a daily driver. The driver should know how to:

• Position the bed properly to minimize ramp angle
• Use ramp extensions for low-clearance loading
• Walk the car onto the bed safely
• Properly secure it for transport

5. Proper Insurance

Make sure the tow company carries enough insurance to cover your vehicle's value. A standard policy that covers a $20,000 sedan won't cover a $300,000 exotic.

6. Climate Considerations

For very valuable cars (concours-level classics, supercars), some owners prefer enclosed transport. Open flatbed exposes the car to weather, road debris, and potential theft. For local emergency tows this is rarely an issue, but for longer transports, it's worth considering.
